The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State Branch has rescued a teenage girl, Miss Uchechi Ukoro from her guardian Mrs Benedicta Ezenibe who burned and tortured her. FIDA Vice-Chairperson, Dr. Vivian Akunesiobike, and Mrs. Nneoma Adiele said the organization received a distress call and immediately lodged a formal complaint at the Kala Police Station, and with the support of the police, rescued the victim from No. 7 Wogboroma Street, Rumuokwuta.
While expressing deep concern over the rising cases of domestic violence and child abuse, FIDA Rivers, vowed to pursue justice for Uchechi. “We will follow this case to its logical conclusion and ensure that Miss Uchechi is reunited with her biological parents and that justice is served.”

During interrogation, Uchechi revealed that her guardian burned her with a hot kitchen knife causing her injuries, while accusing her of “following boys”, also disclosed that she had been denied access to school for some time. FIDA also called for stronger child protection mechanisms and intensified public sensitization to prevent similar cases in the future.
“No child deserves to suffer such cruelty. Society must rise to protect the vulnerable and hold abusers accountable,” the statement added. The Rivers State Police Command has since launched an investigation into the incident, while the victim has been relocated to a safe home under the supervision of child protection authorities.
