The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council in Rivers State has introduced a N170 million Back-to-School Support Initiative to assist families with educational expenses ahead of the new academic session.
Chairman of the council, Hon. Gift Worlu, announced the programme, which will benefit 850 families selected from the 17 wards of the local government area.
Each beneficiary family will receive N200,000 to support the payment of school fees and other costs associated with sending children back to school.
The council said the intervention is designed to reduce the financial burden on parents and guardians, especially at a time when the cost of education and other household needs continues to rise.
It explained that the initiative is not only about providing immediate financial relief but also about encouraging children to remain in school and have better opportunities for the future.
The administration said education remains a major priority in its development plans, stressing that investment in human capital is essential for the sustainable growth of the local government area.
The council expressed hope that the financial assistance would enable beneficiary families to meet key educational obligations without facing excessive financial pressure.
It added that supporting families through education would contribute to building a more skilled and productive population in Obio/Akpor.
The initiative is expected to be implemented across the 17 wards of the local government area.
