Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface’s assertion that certain players of Nigeria’s senior national team lack commitment during their matches has not been well received by many of his teammates.
In a recent interview, Boniface expressed his concerns regarding the attitude of some players while on international duty, indicating that they appear indifferent to the outcomes of the games.
”Some of my teammates approach the national team with a mindset of, we play, and whether we win or lose is inconsequential,” Boniface stated on The Culture League podcast.
”I continually remind them that we represent millions in Nigeria. I believe Africa has the largest population.”
In response to his remarks, a senior player from the team described Boniface’s comments as unfortunate, particularly at a time when the team is facing challenges in the World Cup qualifiers and is working under a new coach.
”We only became aware of his comments a few days ago. It is inappropriate to speak about teammates in such a manner, but since he did not specify names, I will refrain from mentioning mine, although I will share some thoughts regarding his character,” he remarked.
”During the AFCON qualifiers match against Rwanda in Uyo, a senior player nearly confronted Boniface at halftime due to his perceived lack of effort. Other players can confirm what transpired before the second half.

In Russia, he was substituted at halftime and announced his departure from the team, only to retract that statement later. If anyone exhibits a lack of seriousness and indifference, it is Boniface, who is often the first to retreat to the locker room or social media following a loss.
”When Austine Eguavoen served as interim coach, I recall numerous instances where he expressed frustration over Boniface’s commitment while representing the Super Eagles. He was likely reflecting on his behavior rather than that of any other player on the team,” he concluded.
