Nigeria’s AFCON-winning defender Kenneth Omeruo is set to embark on a new journey as he completes a transfer to Romanian powerhouse CFR Cluj on a free transfer.

Super Eagles veteran Kenneth Omeruo will officially join CFR Cluj on July 1, heralding the start of a new challenge for the 30-year-old centre-back following his departure from Turkish club Kasimpasa.

The agreement, facilitated by prominent agent Anamaria Prodan, was nearly confirmed after she shared a photograph of Omeruo with Cluj president Cristi Balaj, indicating the club’s desire to enhance its defence with seasoned experience and leadership.

Omeruo, who has earned 69 international caps for Nigeria and played a pivotal role in the team that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), becomes the sixth Nigerian to wear the Cluj jerseys

With extensive experience in top European leagues—including spells in Spain, England, and Turkey—the Abia-born defender is anticipated to play a crucial role in Cluj’s domestic and international aspirations.

His transfer to Romania is broadly viewed as a strategic move to rejuvenate his club career and possibly secure a regular position in Nigeria’s national team as the 2026 World Cup qualifiers approach.

CFR Cluj, recognized as one of Romania’s most successful clubs in recent years, will rely on Omeruo’s defensive strength and leadership skills as they strive to reclaim the Liga I title and pursue a significant run in European tournaments.

For Omeruo, the objective is clear: to provide stability to the Cluj defense, win trophies, and craft a new chapter in a career that has already made a significant impact on African football.
