WACT-APM Terminals Expands Scholarship Scheme, Empowers 49 More Students in Rivers Communities

As part of its unwavering commitment to community development, WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria has awarded scholarships to 49 additional students from its host communities — Onne and Ogu in Rivers State — including children of two company staff.

The latest beneficiaries, drawn from various universities and polytechnics across Nigeria, raise the total number of students supported by the scheme to 146, reinforcing the company’s dedication to education and youth empowerment. Speaking at the award presentation ceremony, CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria, Frederik Klinke, congratulated the new scholars, emphasizing that the scholarship scheme is built on the company’s redefined community engagement pillars — transparency, visibility, and inclusion.

“This scholarship reflects our commitment to promoting education in our host communities. I have worked in Nigeria for many years, and I’ve seen how lack of funding has altered the course of many young lives. That’s why this program is so important,” Klinke noted. He added that the scholarship initiative was a direct response to the community needs assessment, jointly prepared with local leaders, identifying education support as a key priority for youth development and poverty reduction.

Also speaking, Jeethu Jose, Managing Director of WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of Nigerian youths.“This program empowers students to grow into leaders and valuable contributors to their families, communities, Rivers State, and Nigeria as a whole,” Jose said.

He also highlighted the internship arm of the scholarship, which allows selected scholars to gain practical work experience within the company’s offices. “In addition, we recently launched the ‘WACT EngineerHer’ program — an intensive on-the-job training scheme designed to equip female engineering graduates with relevant skills to thrive, whether here at WACT or in other multinational organizations,” he announced.

One of the awardees, Divine Nei Osaroei, thanked WACT-APM Terminals for its transparent selection process and for easing the financial burden on students, which she said inspires them to aim higher academically. Also present at the event, Abdulrahman Hussaini, Port Manager of Onne Port Complex, encouraged the scholars to take full advantage of the opportunity and become ambassadors of excellence for Nigeria.

Dr. Thompson, a representative of the Ogu King, praised the annual scholarship program for bringing joy to families and urged the beneficiaries to make their communities proud. Dr. Gloria Obo Dibiah, Sole Administrator of Eleme Local Government Area, described education as the “key that opens doors” and encouraged the students to give back to society in the future.

Beyond scholarships, WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria has remained a strong ally to its host communities through diverse CSR initiatives — including the donation of a 10KVA solar system to the Primary Health Centres in Onne and Ogu, training of over 500 women in business development, and the empowerment of more than 1,300 women across Rivers State in the production of sanitary pads, along with numerous infrastructure projects.
