Rivers United Maintains Unrelegated Status

Rivers United

Since the inception of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in 1990, a total of 68 clubs have participated in the competition. The recent relegation of Lobi Stars, after an impressive run of 27 consecutive seasons in the top flight, has left just three clubs with the distinction of never having been relegated since their debut in the league: Rangers International, with an unbroken streak of 36 seasons, Abia Warriors with 12 seasons, and the great  Rivers United with 10 seasons.

This remarkable achievement highlights the consistency, resilience, and competitive prowess of these three clubs in maintaining their top-tier status amidst the challenges of Nigerian football. Rangers, in particular, stand out as a beacon of stability, having navigated the league’s ups and downs for over three decades without faltering. Abia Warriors and Rivers United, though newer to the scene, have also demonstrated their ability to hold their own, cementing their places as formidable teams in the NPFL.

The rarity of such longevity without relegation underlines  the intense competition and unpredictability of the league, where even storied clubs like Lobi Stars can face setbacks. For Rangers, Abia Warriors, and Rivers United, their uninterrupted presence in the NPFL serves as a testament to strong management, dedicated players, and loyal fan bases, setting them apart in the annals of Nigerian football history. As the league continues to evolve, these clubs remain symbols of enduring excellence, inspiring others to strive for similar consistency and success.

Recall that Lobi Stars’ remarkable 27-year run in the Nigeria Premier Football League ended in heartbreak on Saturday evening after a 2–0 loss to Kano Pillars at the Sani Abacha Stadium. The team, which has lacked a fixed home ground, went into matchday 33 languishing at the bottom of the table, desperately needing a positive result.

However, goals by Ahmed Musa and Naziru Auwalu Ibrahim sealed their relegation with five games still remaining. Despite a resilient first-half defensive effort, Lobi’s backline faltered ten minutes into the second half when Rabiu Ali assisted Musa for the opening goal. As Lobi pressed for a late equalizer to cling to survival hopes, Pillars earned a stoppage-time penalty, which Naziru confidently converted to secure the win and confirm Lobi’s exit from the top tier.
