“Stop Using Estate Development To Mask Land Grabbing” – Etche Chairman Warns

Chima Boniface Njoku, Chairman of Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State, has again warned against land grabbing, singling out businesses and operators involved in land transactions under the guise of estate development.

The latest warning was made public today, September 12, 2026, as the council continues to grapple with disputes over land ownership and acquisition in the fast-developing local government area. The issue is of concern to Etche’s expanding property market, where demand for land has increased with residential and commercial development.

Though estate development can bring investment and infrastructure to the area, ownership and title disputes can leave potential buyers and bona fide developers with significant financial exposure.

Njoku has previously made grabbing of land a priority of his administration. He joined the Obio/Akpor local government chairman in November 2025, in an effort to resolve land-related disputes, and cautioned that allowing the problem to continue could present a serious challenge for future generations.

The council has also been more direct about the issue. Njoku had in October 2025, offered N1.5million reward for information that would lead to the capture of an alleged land grabber who was blamed for causing unrest in the area.

The chairman, who spoke publicly about his administration’s stance on land grabbing in Etche as recently as April 2026, indicated the problem was a serious one regardless of whether they had tried to address it before.

The controversies underline the importance of property purchasers ascertaining land ownership and documentation before shelling out money for plots being peddled by developers or individual sellers.

It is also a wider business concern for legitimate property developers. Unresolved ownership disputes can undermine buyer confidence, slow down projects, and pose reputational risks for companies operating in the area.

With the development of Etche, stakes are raised. As more businesses seek land to build housing, commercial projects and other investments, clearer ownership and stronger enforcement will become increasingly important to the growth of the local property market.

Njoku’s latest warning therefore puts the onus on authorities and businesses to ensure that land being marketed for development has a legitimate ownership history, while prospective buyers must carry out proper checks before investing.
