As the world marks the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State, has urged stakeholders, traditional rulers, faith-based organizations, and residents to join the fight against all forms of FGM that cause emotional and psychological harm to the girl child.
Speaking in Port Harcourt, the Chairperson of FIDA Rivers, Emi Jim-George, emphasized the importance of this year’s theme: “Step Up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End Female Genital Mutilation.” She described it as a wake-up call for everyone to actively participate in eliminating the practice, which is still prevalent in some communities across Rivers State.
Jim-George condemned FGM as a violation of fundamental human rights, stating that it infringes on the rights to health, security, physical integrity, and freedom from torture, and cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment.
“Every February 6 is a reminder of the urgent need to eradicate all forms of female genital mutilation. This harmful practice carried out for non-medical reasons, is a grave violation of the rights and dignity of women and girls.
“Female genital mutilation comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genital. it is a violation of the human rights, health, and integrity of the woman and the girl child.
“It is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. it reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against girls and women.”
She further noted that FGM reflects deep-rooted gender inequality and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls, often performed on minors, sometimes leading to lifelong health complications or even death.
Jim-George reiterated the importance of enforcing the Rivers State Dehumanizing and Harmful Traditional Practice Abolition Law No. 11 of 2015, which
prohibits FGM and other harmful cultural practices.

“I want to remind the good people of Rivers State that the law against harmful traditional practices is in full force. If you witness or suspect anyone engaging in FGM, report immediately to ensure the victim gets help and the perpetrators face justice.”
She assured survivors of FGM that they can seek help at the FIDA office, where legal and psychological support will be provided.
“Victims should not suffer in silence. FIDA is committed to ensuring justice for affected individuals and holding perpetrators accountable to serve as a deterrent to others,” Jim-George added.
FIDA Rivers is calling on all stakeholders, government agencies, civil society organizations, and community leaders to unite in the fight against FGM and protect the rights of women and girls across the state.
