Port Harcourt Refinery and Others Begins Loading Kerosene, Diesel, and Petrol

Members of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association (PETROAN) have officially resumed loading Dual-Purpose Kerosene, automotive gas oil (diesel), and Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries. This marks a significant step in the revitalization of Nigeria’s state-owned refineries, which have long struggled to meet domestic demand for refined petroleum products.

PETROAN’s spokesperson confirmed the development in a statement, revealing that both refineries are now operational in supplying key petroleum products to retail outlets. According to the statement, the Port Harcourt refinery is actively distributing petrol, diesel, and kerosene to retailers, while the Warri refinery is currently focused on supplying only diesel and kerosene.

“The restart of petrol sales at both the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, alongside the existing Dangote Refinery, has sparked speculation about potential retail fuel price reductions,” the spokesperson stated. The resurgence of these refineries is expected to bring much-needed competition to the petroleum sector, which could lead to lower prices for consumers.

The revitalization of these refineries, which had faced challenges in recent years, has already begun to yield tangible benefits. One of the immediate impacts is the elimination of adulterated diesel and kerosene from the market, which has been a persistent issue for Nigerians seeking quality fuel.

“The revitalization of these refineries is already bringing numerous benefits, including the eradication of adulterated diesel and kerosene from the market,” the spokesperson added.

It is worth noting however that as the refineries ramp up production and distribution, the competition is expected to intensify, potentially lowering the cost of petroleum products across the country. With many Nigerians calling for more affordable fuel, the increase in local refining capacity is seen as a step toward reducing dependency on imported petroleum and stabilizing fuel prices.

It bears mentioning that the restart of these refineries is a positive development for Nigeria’s energy sector, signaling a move toward greater self-sufficiency in petroleum product production and providing hope for more affordable fuel prices in the near future.
