Top Celebrities And Politicians React To Tems’ Grammy Award

Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has achieved another remarkable milestone by winning the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammy Awards held on Sunday. Her song, Love Me Jeje, triumphed over strong contenders, including Tomorrow by Yemi Alade, MMS by Asake & Wizkid, Sensational by Chris Brown featuring Davido & Lojay, and Higher by Burna Boy.

The track, which samples Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 hit of the same title, has received widespread acclaim since its release in April 2024.Tems’ Grammy win has drawn congratulatory messages from notable figures across the country.

Afrobeats superstar Davido took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to express his pride in Tems, stating: “Congratulations to my one and only! @chrisbrown! And to the Queen @temsbaby, we are proud of you.”

Similarly, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, extended his heartfelt congratulations, emphasizing the importance of Nigeria’s entertainment industry in global recognition. He stated: “I extend my hearty congratulations to our Nigerian Afrobeats star, Tems @temsbaby, who just secured her second Grammy Award with her win in the Best African Music Performance category.”

Obi also commended other Nigerian artists who were nominated, highlighting their significant contributions to the music industry. He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the creative industry, saying: “I also rejoice with Nigeria’s entertainment industry and other Nigerian artists who were nominated for different awards in their respective categories. We must build a nation that fosters growth among the youths and helps them discover and harness their individual talents for national productivity.”

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, also celebrated the victory, calling it a historic moment for Nigerian music. He acknowledged the hard work and talent that led to Tems’ achievement, stating: “This historic achievement marks her as the first Nigerian artist to win in this category, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication.” Sanwo-Olu also recognized other nominees—Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, and Davido—for their contributions to the global music industry.

With this win, Tems has now secured her second Grammy Award, further solidifying her place as a leading figure in the Afrobeats and global music scene. In 2023, she won her first Grammy for her contribution to Future’s song Wait For U, which also featured Drake. Her consistent rise in the industry reflects the growing dominance of Nigerian music on the world stage, as artists continue to break records and push the boundaries of Afrobeats.
