Rejection of electronic transmission of votes a coup against the people – Wike

Governor of River State, Nyesom Wike has reacted to the rejection of the electronic transmission of election results by certain members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike in a statement on Tuesday said, “Mr. President can’t tell us he sincerely wants to conduct a free, fair, and credible election if he/his party rejects transparency and the electronic transmission of results.

“Those who voted against electronic transmission of results should be ashamed of themselves as they are enemies of the country. It is a coup against the people, the National Assembly has plotted a coup against Nigerians.

“If Nigerians were serious none who voted against electronic transmission of results would be able to go home to their constituents”.

It will be recalled that the Senate on Thursday, July 15, sat on clause 52(3) of the Electoral Amendment Act, which deals with electronic means of transferring results, where Senator Kabir Gaya-led Senate Committee on INEC recommended for the transmission of results electronically by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi and Albert Akpan amended the clause that subjected it to the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) providing networks before it could be done.

The amendment was sustained, but the plenary became rowdy following a pandemonium in which the Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan forced the sitting into closed-door where the members of the senate voted physically for and against the process of electronic vote transmission.

As each Senator was called to vote, it was gathered that certain members of the house voted against the process, including the Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.
