Scores killed, 300 injured in Anambra communal clash

A yet-to-be-identified number of persons have been killed in a communal clash in Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The incident which occurred on Thursday left over 300 persons injured with 50 others missing.

A timely intervention combined team of soldiers and police restored normalcy to Omor and Umunbo villages after the bloody communal clash

The two villages are among the food producing communities in Anambra State, where rice and other grains were heavily produced, and have been at loggerheads over a piece of land.

Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Uche Okafor, accompanied by military and mobile policemen intervened to quell the stormy situation.

However, no fewer than 300 farmers sustained various degrees of bullets and machete injuries during communal clash between the feuding communities LGA.

It was also gathered that some 50 persons were allegedly abducted during the bloody clash.

The squabble, which started during the last dry season, was initially nipped before it could snowball into major crises.

The current misunderstanding was allegedly instigated and by some farmers to seek vengeance.

According to an eye witness, a breach of a gentleman’s agreement reached between the two monarchs of the two communities sometime last year has been exploited by some persons to create chaos.

However, in an interview with some youths who witnessed the fight, claimed that some Umumbo farmers were the first to launch attack on Omor farmers.

Following a distress call from a traditional ruler simply known as, Igwe Calidon (Ezeaniukwu kingdom), some persons were apprehended.

It was gathered that some appreciable number of houses, shops and rice mills belonging to Umumbo community were torched in the heat of the clash.
