Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after defeating Mexico 2–1 in their Round of 16 encounter on Thursday.
Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute before Mary Dunstan doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 71st minute, putting the Flamingos in control of the contest.
Mexico pulled a goal back through Emilie Delgado in stoppage time, but Nigeria held on to secure victory and book their place in the last eight.
The result keeps the Flamingos’ campaign alive as they continue their pursuit of the title in Morocco. Nigeria had entered the knockout stage after finishing second in Group B, with victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea helping them secure qualification.
The Nigerian side will now face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on November 1 after the South American team defeated Germany 1–0 in their Round of 16 match on Wednesday.
Venezuela secured the victory through Diana Bravo’s fifth-minute goal, ending Germany’s hopes of progressing to the last eight.
The upcoming encounter presents another important test for Nigeria, with both teams seeking a place in the semi-finals.
The Flamingos will look to build on their win over Mexico and maintain their momentum as the tournament enters its decisive stages.
