Gunmen kill 43-year-old youth leader in Choba

Unknown shooters on Thursday afternoon shot and killed, Emmanuel Ikechukwu, an acting Youth President in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Choba has been a hotbed of gun violence following a leadership tussle which began in the Community earlier in the year.

Residents said the gunmen invaded the home of the youth leader at the Rumuchakara area of the Community at about 3 am on Thursday morning, dragged him out and shot him in the presence of his wife and child.

The Community went into turmoil following the killing Mr Lawrence Igwe, who was the CDC chairman of the Community on July 14.

Mr Igwe, who was also a Director in the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, was killed together with one Chief Orji said to be the Community’s traditional chief priest.

A meeting called by the police to settle the leadership rift in the Community was boycotted by the youths on July 24 over the re-arrest and detention of four executives members of Choba body including the chairman.

IHUNDA and others were invited by men of Anti-Cultism and were being detained due to an investigation over an alleged petition.

They were invited after the death of the Choba CDC chairman and Chief priest and released a day before the visit of Governor NYESOM WIKE but were invited and re-arrested on Sunday, July 21, 2019, by men of Anti-Cultism Unit of Rivers State Police Command.

The Paramount ruler of the Choba community, Eze Raymond Okocha, while reacting to the murder of the acting youth chairman, described the development as disheartening.

He said that people have been sneaking into the Community to kill residents despite the ongoing peace process in the area.

Nnamdi Omoni, the public relations officers of the Rivers State Police Command while confirming the incident said the victim was 43 years old.

He added that investigation has commenced over the incident.
