The management of Port Harcourt Shopping Mall has been urged to ensure that the victims of the fire incident are given adequate medical attention.

President National Union of Shop and Distributive Employees, (NUSDE), Comrade Innocent Jaja, stated this to our reporter Tina Amanda when NUSDE and her umbrella Union United Labour Congress ULC visited the management and the union workers of the mall to sympathise and reassure them of its support over the recent fire incident.

Comrade Jaja implored the management to review its safety rules to forestall future occurrence, stressing that the union will always see to the welfare of workers.

“We believe that the management of SPAR will give them adequate medical attention, but we appeal to them, that they must be giving the best medical treatment, and I suggested that there is an urgent need for them to be flown abroad. We will continue to engage the management and if truly that their workers are not insured, the union will take it up to ensure they are insured”

In her response, Manager Portharcourt Shopping Mall, Mrs Chioma Okorie, said the management is doing its best to ensure that the victims recover as soon as possible, adding that the management will embark on intensive training of staff.

“We are giving support to the affected victims and they are doing very well, we are hoping they will be of hospital soon. We already have talks with some agencies that will train our staff on what is expected at the workplace, that is just the slight thing we lacked at that point so we are putting everything in place, but for the equipment and gadgets, we have everything on the ground.

“I want the public to know that everything is back to normal, nobody should be afraid anything because we are back to business”

On his part, Vice Chairman of United Labour Congress, Comrade Innocent Lord-Douglas, urged the management to have a cordial relationship with its workers, as the staff is the reason they are in business
