Time to Move On’: Adepoju Calls for Lookman’s Next Big Step

Mutiu Adepoju, the former Super Eagles midfielder, has encouraged the in-form Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman to contemplate a move away from Atalanta.

The ex-midfielder, who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s historic victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, expressed his thoughts on Lookman’s career during an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa,

Adepoju believes that Lookman has surpassed his current situation in Italy, suggesting that a transfer from Bergamo should be on the table.

“Recently, Lookman has performed exceptionally well for both Atalanta and the national team, the Super Eagles,” Adepoju stated. “While continuing with Atalanta wouldn’t be detrimental, I would prefer to see him at a larger club in either La Liga or the Premier League. He has excelled and deserves a spot at a bigger club — I am confident he will succeed anywhere.”

The Nigerian international winger was among the top performers in Serie A last season, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists in 31 matches. In total, Lookman scored 20 goals and assisted seven times in 40 appearances for the club, according to statistics.

It is also worth noting that he scored a remarkable hat-trick in the Europa League final, aiding Atalanta in their victory over Bayer Leverkusen to secure the title.

Even though the Nigerian international has two years left on his contract, the former Real Sociedad player believes this is the ideal moment for Lookman to pursue new challenges.

“Even with a contract at Atalanta, I feel it’s the right time for him to explore another league, as I don’t think he has anything more to prove in Italy,” Adepoju added. “Lookman requires a new adventure to elevate his career. While staying with the Italian club wouldn’t be a poor choice, I wouldn’t oppose him seeking greener pastures elsewhere next season.
