Rivers Firm to Revamp Nigeria’s Fishing Sector

In a step toward enhancing Nigeria’s industrial fishing sector, BGAM Services Nigeria Limited, a local company based in Rivers State, has secured a contract to transform the Federal Coastal Fisheries Terminal (FCFT).

This ambitious project, driven by a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the federal government, aims to modernise the terminal into a cutting-edge hub for marine and fishing operations, fostering economic growth and food security.

The FCFT, strategically located near key offshore oil and gas fields, will boast a 190-square-meter berthing area designed to accommodate a range of vessels. According to Chief Lucky Brown, the company’s CEO, the terminal will include a slipway for vessel repairs, a tank farm with a 1.5 million-litre capacity for petroleum storage, and another tank of equal capacity for water supplies.

Additional features will include cold storage for fish and perishables, warehousing, office spaces for lease, a canteen, a restaurant, a weighbridge, and reliable power from both grid and alternative sources like solar and diesel generators.

Chief Lucky Brown, speaking to journalists after the contract was awarded, emphasised that the PPP model is ideal for such transformative initiatives. He expressed confidence that the project would propel Nigeria’s fisheries industry forward, positioning the country as a leader in the sector. “This partnership harnesses private sector innovation to drive national progress,” he noted, highlighting the government’s commitment to leveraging private expertise for economic development.

Security at the revamped terminal will be top-tier, integrating advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, alongside private and national security forces. Brown described the facility as poised to become unparalleled in its class, offering a one-stop solution for vessel operations and marine businesses across the Gulf of Guinea. “Our vision is to create a secure, world-class hub that supports both domestic and export markets,” he said.

The project is expected to unlock new investment opportunities, spurring economic growth and reinforcing Nigeria’s position at the forefront of an economic revival. By rehabilitating and expanding the FCFT, BGAM Services aims to create a modern service hub that not only supports the fishing industry but also contributes to broader national goals of industrialisation and self-sufficiency.
