Bright Chimezie Signs For Sony Music

Bright Chimezie Signs with Sony Music Publishing After Davido’s Endorsement

Nigerian highlife legend Bright Chimezie, aged 64, has signed a publishing deal with Sony Music Publishing (SMP) West Africa, a global leader representing artists like Davido, Wizkid, Tems, Mayorkun, Sarkodie, Lojay, and Ladipoe. The announcement was made on Friday via SMP’s official Instagram page.

The deal follows a viral resurgence of interest in Chimezie’s music, sparked by a meeting with Afrobeats star David ‘Davido’ Adeleke on May 19, 2025, in Lagos. Davido had publicly credited Chimezie’s album Because of English as the inspiration for his hit song With You, featuring Port Harcourt artist Omah Lay. Their meeting, coupled with a viral video of Chimezie showcasing his unique dance moves, reignited attention to his work, reminiscent of the recent revival of late highlife musician Mike Ejeagha.

SMP’s statement celebrated Chimezie’s over four-decade career, highlighting his vibrant style, infectious rhythms, and the creation of the ‘Zigima Sound’. The partnership aims to introduce his timeless music to new global audiences while protecting and promoting his creative legacy.

“Welcome to the SMP train, the Duke of African Music!” the statement concluded, marking a new chapter for the Abia-born iconic songbird.

This is indeed a Win for vintage Nigerian Songs.
