Nigerian comedian Sabinus has drawn attention to Port Harcourt’s streetlight problem after publicly appealing to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to install streetlights on major roads across the city.
“Rivers State government, give us street light on major roads this is not too much to ask for God sake,” he wrote, directly tagging the governor.
The comedian, whose real name is Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Ejekwu, made the appeal in a social media post, expressing concern over insecurity and the reported cases of robbery and killings in poorly lit areas.
Sabinus also mentioned Obiri Ikwerre Junction, GRA Junction near the Immigration Office, Air Force Junction and Eleme Junction as locations of concern. His post has brought renewed attention to the relationship between public infrastructure and residents’ sense of security, particularly at night.
Although Sabinus is widely known for his comedy and entertainment content, his intervention places him among public figures using their platforms to draw attention to issues affecting everyday life in their communities.
Poorly lit roads can make it difficult for motorists and pedestrians to navigate at night and may increase opportunities for criminal activity. While streetlights alone cannot eliminate crime, functional public lighting is an important part of urban safety infrastructure.
The appeal also raises questions about the condition of streetlights on major routes, the agencies responsible for their installation and maintenance, and the steps being taken to address residents’ concerns.
There is also no confirmed public response from the Rivers State Government to his appeal at the time of writing.
For a public figure whose influence extends beyond comedy, the intervention demonstrates how celebrity platforms can bring local issues into wider public discussion.
