Democracy Day: FG Declares Thursday Public Holiday

In commemoration of the 2025 Democracy Day, the Federal Government (FG) has declared Thursday, 12th June as a public holiday.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, announced this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, noting that the Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the government.

Tunji-Ojo, a former member of the House of Representatives and native of Ondo State, congratulated Nigerians on the celebration of 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and our future assured. The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength and courage and a hope Renewed than ever”, he said.

The Minister reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration to the universal principles of democracy. This, he said, is rooted in the freely expressed will of the people in shaping Nigeria’s political, economic, social, and cultural systems.

Meanwhile, Tinubu is expected to confer national honours on selected federal lawmakers as part of this year’s Democracy Day celebrations.

The investiture ceremony is scheduled to hold at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, during a special joint session organised by the leadership of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
