The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged Nigerians to exercise restraint and avoid premature condemnation of Chief Government Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo, following a viral video alleging naira abuse.

The commission stated that the video in question is currently undergoing forensic analysis, raising concerns about potential manipulation through artificial intelligence. The viral footage, which reportedly depicts Tompolo dancing while naira notes are sprayed around him at a celebration, has sparked considerable public debate and calls for his prosecution, especially given the EFCC’s recent crackdown on naira abuse by other public figures.

However, the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, emphasized the need for a fair hearing. “Nigerians, please don’t condemn Tompolo for a mere allegation. Let’s give him a fair hearing. We have subjected the video to forensic analysis because these days people can create such videos with AI,” the Chairman reportedly stated, highlighting the evolving challenges of digital evidence.

This development comes as the EFCC had earlier confirmed that Tompolo would be invited for questioning regarding the incident, asserting that “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer”. The EFCC’s stance underscores a growing awareness within law enforcement of the sophisticated tools available for generating deceptive media.

The commission’s commitment to forensic analysis aims to ascertain the authenticity of the video before any definitive action is taken against Tompolo, who has previously faced other allegations of financial misconduct and has been the subject of past EFCC investigations regarding alleged N34 billion fraud and other charges, though these are separate from the current naira abuse allegation.

The incident has reignited discussions on social media regarding selective justice and the impartiality of the EFCC’s enforcement efforts. Public attention will now be keenly focused on the outcome of the forensic analysis and the subsequent steps the EFCC will take in this high-profile case.
