Liverpool lift EPL trophy as Salah wins Golden Boot, Playmaker awards

Liverpool Football Club lifted the Premier League (EPL) trophy on Sunday following a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on the final day of the season at Anfield. The victory secured Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th league title. This triumph came in Arne Slot’s first season as manager, ending Manchester City’s streak of four consecutive league titles under Pep Guardiola.

Meanwhile, Liverpool’s right winger, Mohamed Salah, who won the 2024/25 Player of the Season award on Saturday, also matched the all-time EPL record for goal involvement in a single season. Salah’s goal during Liverpool’s draw with Crystal Palace marked his 47th direct goal involvement in the 2024/25 EPL campaign.

The Egyptian international equalled the all-time record for the most combined goals and assists by a player in one season, previously held by Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer. Salah’s achievement was more remarkable because he accomplished it in a 38th match season, whereas Cole and Shearer reached their 47th goal involvements in 42ndmatch seasons.

EPL featured 22 teams until the 1995/96 season, meaning each club played 42th matches. From 1995/96 onwards, the league was reduced to 20 teams, resulting in the current 38th match season format.

Salah already broke the record for a 38th match season with his 45th contribution, an assist for Luis Diaz against West Ham United on 13 April. His 46th came as a goal during Liverpool’s 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur two weeks later, a result that secured the league title.

Salah did not break the record for the most assists in a single season, which remains held by Arsenal’s Thierry Henry (2002/03) and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne (2019/20), both registering 20 assists.

This means Salah produced an impressive 18 assists in 2024/25, one fewer than midfielder Mesut Özil, who created 19 goals for Arsenal in 2015/16. The 32-year-old also won the 2024/25 Golden Boot award, having scored 29 goals, six more than his closest rival, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

It is the fourth time Salah has won the Golden Boot, having won it in 2017/18, 2018/19, and 2021/22. Only Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has won it as often. Salah also claimed the Premier League’s Playmaker award, presented to the player with the most assists (18).

He had six more assists than second-placed Jacob Murphy, who registered 12. Salah recently committed his future to Slot’s side by signing a two-year contract, which will keep him at Liverpool until at least 2027.

Salah became the first player to win player of the season, golden boot and playmaker awards in the same season. Aside from Salah’s awards, Arsenal’s David Raya and Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels also won the 2024/25 Golden Glove award.

They are joint winners of the accolade presented to the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets in a season. Raya and Sels each finished the campaign with 13 clean sheets. Sels conceded during Forest’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, and a few minutes later, Raya conceded in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory at Southampton.

This is the third occasion since the award was introduced in 2004/05 that two goalkeepers have shared the prize. Raya, who also won the award last season, becomes only the fourth goalkeeper in history to retain it, following Liverpool’s Pepe Reina, Manchester City’s Joe Hart, and Ederson, also of Man City.

In 2025/26, Raya will aim to join Reina and Hart as the only goalkeepers to win the award three seasons consecutively. Raya and Sels’ 13 clean sheets are the fewest ever recorded by Golden Glove winners.
