To tackle drug trafficking in Nigeria, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted opioids worth over N3.2 billion at the Apapa seaport in Lagos and the Port Harcourt port in Onne, Rivers State.
Among those arrested in nationwide operations were two octogenarians: 80-year-old Ayuba Ashiru in Kaduna and 82-year-old Uloma Uchechi Sunday with her daughter, Chisom, in Abia.
Ayuba, previously jailed for drug offences, was found with 2.3kg of cannabis in Sabon Gari, Kaduna. In Abia, Uloma and her daughter were caught with methamphetamine, tramadol, skunk, and N130,600 in cash.

At the Onne port, NDLEA uncovered three million pills of tapentadol and carisoprodol worth N2.1bn.
In Lagos’ Apapa port, 169,800 bottles of codeine syrup valued at N1.1bn were seized from a container falsely declared as car parts.
Other major busts include 199,200 tramadol pills and 650g of cannabis in Kwara, 143kg of skunk in Niger, and 594.8kg of the same substance in Nasarawa.
In Lagos, a courier parcel containing 250g of cocaine concealed in female headgear was intercepted.
NDLEA operatives also arrested a 29-year-old man with an AK-47 rifle hidden in maize along the Abuja-Kaduna highway.
Across the states, the agency continued its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy in schools.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended officers for their balanced focus on drug supply and demand reduction.
