Berardi Strikes Late as Sassuolo Beat Torino 2-1

Sassuolo secured their first Serie A victory of the season with a late 2-1 home win over Torino, ending a run of six league meetings without a victory against Il Toro.

After suffering defeat at Atalanta on the opening weekend, Alberto Aquilani’s side looked far sharper on home soil and almost took the lead inside 90 seconds. Simone Cinquegrano’s powerful effort came back off the woodwork, immediately putting Torino on notice.

The visitors responded positively, with Ché Adams seeing a close-range effort saved by Arijanet Muric. Sassuolo, however, continued to look the more dangerous side and eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the half-hour mark.

Armand Laurienté’s driving run from midfield disrupted the Torino defence before Vasilije Adžić produced a clever flick to release Cristian Volpato. The Sassuolo attacker then curled a stunning 25-yard effort beyond Diego Mascardi to put the hosts ahead.

Torino refused to be discouraged and levelled just before half-time. Alessio Cacciamani delivered an excellent ball towards the back post, where Pietro Comuzzo rose to head home and score his first goal for the club.

The second half began cautiously, with both teams struggling to create clear openings. Cinquegrano fired straight at Mascardi following a swift Sassuolo counter, while Giovanni Simeone headed over from a corner.

Aquilani turned to his bench in the closing stages and was rewarded when club captain Domenico Berardi made the decisive impact. Introduced as a substitute, the veteran forward latched onto Fedde Leysen’s knockdown and calmly steered the ball into the net to secure Sassuolo’s first Serie A win of the campaign.

The hosts comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to give Aquilani his first Serie A victory as Sassuolo manager.

For Torino boss Ignazio Abate, the search for a first win since taking charge continues, with the midweek Coppa Italia clash against Monza offering another opportunity to break his early-season drought.
