Police Resume Issuance of Tinted Glass Permit Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force has reinstated the issuance of tinted glass permits nationwide, following a directive from Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

This announcement was made in a statement on Wednesday by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

The decision to resume permits stems from increasing public concerns and complaints about the harassment of vehicle owners by law enforcement for having factory-installed tinted windows.

“The Nigeria Police Force, directed by Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has restarted the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) across the country via a secure and user-friendly online platform available at https://possap.gov.ng.

“This initiative addresses widespread public grievances regarding the harassment of drivers with tinted windows and aims to establish a clear, transparent, and accountable process for regularizing factory-fitted tinted glass on vehicles,” the statement indicated.

Emphasizing the commonality of modern cars designed with tinted windows for comfort and aesthetic appeal, the police highlighted the necessity of an official system to oversee their use.

“With the increasing production of automobiles featuring tinted windows, it has become crucial to offer a standardized system that supports legitimate use while ensuring public safety.

“Unfortunately, tinted vehicles have often been misused for criminal activities, including kidnapping, armed robbery, ‘one-chance’ scams, and other forms of banditry,” Adejobi elucidated.

The statement pointed out that the misuse of tinted windows by criminals poses operational hurdles for law enforcement and jeopardizes national security.

“Their usage diminishes police visibility and hinders effective law enforcement, thereby exacerbating public insecurity.

“The reintroduction of the permit system is a tactical action to distinguish lawful users, such as those with medical needs or security personnel, while curbing misuse for criminal acts,” he stated.

He remarked that this reintroduced system aims to assist the police in enhancing investigations and bolstering the overall security framework in Nigeria.

Additionally, he mentioned that to maintain authenticity and facilitate access, the new platform includes digital permits featuring QR codes and offers a rapid processing period.

“It is anticipated that this will improve police investigative capabilities and fortify national security initiatives. Now, applicants can submit their permit requests online, with identity verification conducted through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), alongside biometric data and background evaluations.

“The system also provides QR-coded digital permits, with a streamlined processing duration of 72 hours. To ensure a seamless transition, a grace period of 30 days has been approved, starting from May 1st, 2025, during which vehicle owners are expected to comply,” he noted.

Furthermore, he clarified that law enforcement will begin active implementation following the grace period, and the police caution that officers who misuse the enforcement process will face disciplinary action.

“Enforcement will commence at the conclusion of this period. Officers engaging in unprofessional practices, such as extortion or harassment, during enforcement will be strictly dealt with in accordance with existing disciplinary procedures,” he asserted.

The Inspector-General assured the public of the Force’s dedication to modern policing based on transparency, accountability, and community cooperation.

“The Inspector-General of Police emphasizes the Force’s commitment to a tech-driven, citizen-centered policing strategy.

“He encourages the public to support the initiative for the sake of safer roads, improved public trust, and a more secure Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
