“Nigeria Joins Global Community to Mark International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members”

Every twenty-fifth day of March, Nigeria joins the rest of the globe to mark the International Day of solidarity with detained and missing staff members.

It is a special day to commemorate the anniversary of workers who have faced tough times in their line of duties and also a call to action to protect their rights, and well-being and support the efforts made.

International Day of Solidarity with detained and missing staff members was established by the United Nations to raise awareness about the issues facing staff members while carrying out important jobs, and also a way to remember and honor workers who have effortlessly serviced humanity, like the abducted journalist, in 1985, Alec Collett, who was kidnapped and later found dead in 2009, the 28 civilian UN workers who were detained in 2021 to 2023.

Following the message of the day which focuses on the safety and security as well as the dangers encountered by staff members in their jobs, a call was made for more encouragement for their labor whether dead or alive.

A security expert, Chief Casca Ogusu, emphasized the need for more to be done for the persons involved and to make sure those left behind are in good condition.

On his part, a human rights Advocate, Mr prince Wiro, lamented the way in which some workers are mistreated while carrying out their duties, stating that there should be freedom of expression and existence as no one is superior to another.

Also responding to a member of a non-governmental organization, Mr Abayomi Sarumi said there should be guiding policies to every operation to protect those in servitude.

On this day, we salute the courage and service of workers in some of the most challenging parts of the world and we call for greater action to ensure their safety and security.
