From Studio Rat to Superstar: Banky W Shares Wizkid’s Musical Journey

Renowned music executive Banky W recently shared insights into the early days of Wizkid’s career, recounting the singer’s journey from obscurity to stardom.

Banky W, who played a crucial role in launching Wizkid’s career through his record label, Empire Mates Entertainment (EME), opened up about the young artist’s struggles before fame.

In a video that has since gone viral, Banky described Wizkid as a “studio rat,” a term he used to highlight the singer’s dedication and resilience.

According to Banky, Wizkid spent countless hours hanging around studios, driven by a passion for creating music despite not being able to afford studio time. “Wizkid for a long time in his life was not fortunate enough to afford studio time,” Banky said.

Wizkid’s solution was to linger in studios, waiting for producers or engineers to give him a chance to record, even if only for a few minutes.

Banky W noted that this experience shaped Wizkid’s unique creative process. “So, all day long, he would be working on hooks and melodies… just in case he was given the opportunity to jump on the mic for five minutes,” he shared.

Banky explained that Wizkid learned to compose music quickly, always prepared to make the most of any moment he was given.

This relentless drive ultimately transformed Wizkid into one of the fastest songwriters Banky had ever encountered. “He will just sit, listen, and start freestyling a melody that would become a song that the whole world would want to sing. That is where the name Wiz started from,” Banky said.

Today, Wizkid is celebrated as a global afrobeat star, but his journey began as a young artist willing to work tirelessly for any opportunity, fueled his rise to the top.
