The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, has urged greater investment in grassroots sports as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence anniversary.
Adeboye congratulated Nigerians on the anniversary. He also called for renewed commitment to nation-building and youth development.
He said the anniversary should serve as a time to celebrate Nigeria’s journey and reflect on the responsibility of citizens and institutions.
According to Adeboye, sports remains a major tool for national unity, youth empowerment and international recognition.
He said grassroots development is key to creating opportunities for young Nigerians to discover and develop their talents.
“As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of Independence, we must remember that nation-building is a collective responsibility. Everyone has a role to play,” Adeboye said.
He added that the government’s focus on youth opportunities and grassroots inclusion could help create stronger pathways for young talents.
Adeboye said Nigeria’s sporting history shows that athletes from schools, communities and modest backgrounds can become national heroes when given the right support.
“Every champion begins somewhere. Many of the athletes who have carried our flag proudly around the world started from schools, streets and community competitions,” he said.
The presidential aide also urged Nigerians to view sports beyond medals and trophies.
He said sports can create jobs, promote discipline, strengthen communities and provide productive opportunities for young people.
Adeboye called for stronger collaboration among federal and state governments, local councils, schools, sporting federations, communities and the private sector.
He said such partnerships would help improve sporting facilities and competitions at the grassroots.
The SSA added that his office would continue to support initiatives aimed at taking sporting opportunities closer to young Nigerians.
“At 66, our message is one of hope, unity and responsibility. We have challenges, but we also have extraordinary human potential,” Adeboye said.
“Through sports, we can unite our people, empower our youth and build champions who will carry Nigeria’s flag with pride.”
Adeboye wished President Bola Tinubu, Nigerian athletes, sports stakeholders and citizens at home and abroad a peaceful Independence anniversary.
