Rivers State is seeking stronger trade and investment ties with Norway, with a focus on oil and gas, healthcare, education, and other areas of mutual interest.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara made the call on Thursday during a meeting with the Norwegian Ambassador to Nigeria, Svein Bæra, at Government House, Port Harcourt.
The governor, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, said the long-standing stockfish trade between Norway and Nigeria could provide a starting point for broader economic cooperation.
He noted that the trade, which has existed for almost 100 years, could be expanded into other areas of international business.
Fubara also highlighted Rivers State’s position as a major hub of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, saying Norwegian companies could explore opportunities in the sector, particularly in developing downstream products for international markets.

He identified healthcare and education as other areas where both sides could develop partnerships.
The governor said the state’s investment and collaboration agency would work with the Norwegian Embassy to identify areas of possible cooperation. He also encouraged the Norwegian delegation to engage the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce and other business groups.
The Norwegian ambassador said the delegation visited Rivers to explore trade and investment opportunities, particularly in stockfish and oil and gas.
Bæra said discussions with stockfish importers and other stakeholders in the state would help both sides identify areas of mutual economic interest.
He expressed hope that the engagement would strengthen the existing trade relationship between Norway and Rivers State.
