Rivers United technical adviser Finidi George has expressed satisfaction with his side’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Kun Khalifat FC in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday Five encounter in Port Harcourt.
The “Pride of Rivers” produced a dominant second-half display on Thursday to secure their biggest league win of the season and move up to second position on the NPFL table.
Salman Abubakar opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a superb effort from outside the box. Rivers United created further opportunities before the break but went into halftime with a narrow 1-0 advantage.
The hosts returned from the interval with greater intensity. Chijioke Mbaoma doubled their lead in the 49th minute after being set up by Alex Oyowah.
Abubakar then completed his brace nine minutes later following a fine team move, putting Rivers United firmly in control at 3-0.
Wasiu Falolu added a fourth goal in the 62nd minute, with Mbaoma providing the assist, before substitute Ekene Awazie completed the rout six minutes from full time.
Reacting to the result, Finidi admitted that he had expected a difficult encounter and was pleased with the margin of victory.
“I’m very happy with the result, especially the goals,” Finidi said, adding that he had anticipated a challenging game.
The Rivers United coach also urged his players to maintain consistency, stressing that the team has significant ambitions for the season. He noted that the coming weeks would be demanding, with several matches scheduled in a short period.
