Soldiers kill one, injure others in Oyigbo as Wike refuses to lift curfew

Florence Uwaeme

Nigerian soldiers from the 6 division Port Harcourt have been accused of invading people’s homes and beating them up in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

They were also alleged to have been shooting sporadically in the air, creating panic in the LGA.

Governor Nyesom Wike declared a dusk to dawn curfew on the LGA last week after days of rioting following the #EndSARS protests.

Five soldiers, four civilians, and three police officers were killed during the rioting, and two police stations burnt.

Wike, yesterday lifted the curfew imposed on parts of Obio-Akpor and Port Harcourt but insisted that that of Oyigbo will remain in full force till further notice.

According to one of the victims of the raid on Wednesday, some soldiers came to a house at Abuja Junction and battered every living being they set their eyes on.

He said the soldiers who had been shooting around the area since Tuesday night, were passing by and heard noises, the noises which were made by fowls in the poultry located behind the compound.

“As they passed through the backyard, to see what was breeding the noise, on coming back, they decided to terrorize the young men in the house.

“They brought down their doors, shot on the ceiling, and beat an old woman then asked her to provide the men that live in the house.

“As they broke into the rooms, they started beating them without any provocation leading to the death of one of the occupants of the house”.
