Rivers Youths issue 7 days ultimatum to ExxonMobil, Kenpoly over retrenchment of staff

The Rivers State Youth Leaders Coalition (RSYLC) on Saturday expressed shock over the sacking of 495 workers of ExxoMobil Producing Nigeria Limited.

The group also criticised the laying-off about 170 casual staff of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic (KENPOLY), Bori.

Comrade Yamaabana Legborsi
Acting Chairman, Rivers State Youth Coalition/President-General, Ogoni Youth Federation described the development as the height of insensitivity.

He said that whereas the whole world is providing palliative, economic stimulus and protecting workers right, a government institution and a multi-national oil company are decimating jobs and deliberately infusing hardship on the people.

“We expected corporate bodies to help in minimizing and mitigating the negative impact of COVID-19 on their workers at this trying time and not to betray and turn back on them just because of profit.

” Consequently, Rivers State Youth Leaders gives 7-days Altimatum to ExxonMobil and Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic to re-instate the sacked workers.

“Failure to adhere to the above, we shall be left with no option than to mobilize Rivers State Youths and embark on a mass peaceful protest in solidarity with the affected workers”.
