World Teachers Day : We Are The Most Neglected In The Rivers State Civil Service – Teachers

As the world marked the World’s Teachers Day yesterday, October 5th 2018, some teachers have lamented the attitude of government to the teaching profession in what they described as ‘dumping ground’ as long as it has to do with teaching especially in Rivers State.

Our correspondent who was at the venue of this year’s teachers day reports that the event was filled with laments by teachers who said that the way and manner teachers are been treating calls for urgent attention.

A principal in one of the secondary schools who did not want his name in print told our theportcitynews correspondent that for the past ten years, his promotion has not been implemented either has he received office impress for the past six years.

In a separate reaction, some of the fourteen thousand teachers recruited under the Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s administration in 2013 also called on the incumbent governor, Barrister Nyesome Ezenwo Wike to be gracious to the teachers by completing the backlog of salary arrears owed them in some local government areas.

They also lamented the inability of the Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board to issue out the remaining confirmation of appointment letters to those that are yet to get theirs.

Also, the teachers called on the governor to fulfill his promise of giving teachers the interest free loan in order to better their livelihood.

Theportcitynews correspondent reports that the turnout of teachers for the event was poor as compared to the expected number of teachers.

When asked, those present who agreed to speak theportcitynews said more than 80% of the teachers are not happy due to the neglect and ill-treatment being meted on them hence, they see no reason to spend their transport fare to come to listen to what they tagged ‘wasteful promises’ which they have heard every year.
