Nigeria’s Flamingos will aim to reach the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final for the first time when they face Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final in Morocco.
The Nigerian youngsters are one victory away from making history, but they must overcome a formidable Brazilian side also seeking a place in the championship decider.
For head coach Akeem Busari and his players, reaching the semi-finals represents a remarkable turnaround after a difficult start to their campaign.
The Flamingos opened the tournament with a 2-1 defeat to Poland, putting their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages under pressure. Nigeria responded with a 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico before producing an impressive 3-1 win against defending champions North Korea.
They carried that momentum into the Round of 16, defeating Mexico 2-1 to book their place in the quarter-finals.
Nigeria’s quarter-final meeting with Venezuela proved more demanding, with neither side able to find a breakthrough for much of the contest. However, Azeezat Oduntan converted a penalty in the 89th minute to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory and send the Flamingos into the last four.
Brazil will present another stern test, with forward Greise Kelly expected to be a key threat. She has recorded three goals and five assists during the tournament, making her one of the players Nigeria will need to contain.
The Flamingos will also look to goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho to maintain her strong performances. Her composure and timely interventions could be important against a Brazilian team with considerable attacking quality.
Speaking to FIFA.com, Busari described reaching the semi-finals as a dream come true and said he was determined to make Nigeria proud.
“Reaching the semi-finals is a dream come true for me and a great achievement. I’m looking forward to it because I want to make my country proud. We want to give our best in the next match and show everyone what we can do,” the coach said.
Nigeria head into the encounter after winning four consecutive matches following their opening-day defeat. The coaching crew will hope to maintain the team’s defensive organisation while ensuring the players take their chances in front of goal.
Victory would take the Flamingos into their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final, marking a significant milestone for Nigerian women’s football at youth level.
The semi-final is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3, in Rabat, Morocco. Kick-off is at 6:00 p.m. local time, corresponding to 7:00 p.m. in Nigeria.
