The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Rivers State Branch, has urged the public to recognise stroke symptoms early and seek immediate medical attention to prevent deaths and long-term disabilities.
The association’s Chairman, Professor Ureh Annabel Oparaodu, made the call in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Duukori Thankgod, to mark World Stroke Day on October 29, 2026.
The celebration, held under the theme, “Every Minute Counts #ActFAST #BeFAST,” highlights the importance of taking swift action when stroke symptoms appear.
The association identified facial drooping, weakness in the arms, and slurred speech as major warning signs of stroke, advising anyone who notices these symptoms to seek emergency medical care without delay.

It also encouraged the public to reduce their risk of stroke by maintaining healthy blood pressure, managing diabetes, eating balanced meals, exercising regularly and avoiding tobacco use.
The NMA Rivers State Branch emphasised that prompt medical attention could save lives, protect brain function and reduce the chances of lasting disability.
It further urged Nigerians to remember the FAST approach: Face, Arms, Speech, and Time, explaining that the method helps people identify possible stroke symptoms and understand the need for immediate medical intervention.
The association stressed that delaying treatment could worsen the condition, urging individuals to act quickly whenever stroke warning signs are noticed.
