Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Nigerian to hold the position permanently in the organisation’s history.
The confirmation was announced on Thursday, October 29, 2026, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) congratulating Adamu on his appointment.
Adamu previously served as CAF’s Acting General Secretary after the departure of Swiss-Congolese administrator Véron Mosengo-Omba in March 2026.
Before his elevation, the Nigerian held key positions within CAF, serving as Director of Competitions and later Director of Tournaments and Events. His experience in organising and managing major continental competitions has been central to his rise within the organisation.
Adamu is the son of Amos Adamu, a former senior Nigerian sports administrator who served on FIFA’s Executive Committee.
Reacting to the appointment, NFF Acting General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme described the development as a significant milestone for Nigerian football administration and expressed confidence in Adamu’s ability to succeed in the role.
“This is, indeed, very good news. I am so happy for Samson Adamu on his confirmation, and I know he is going to make Nigeria and Africa proud,” Ikpeme said.
He described Adamu as a knowledgeable and experienced football administrator who continues to improve his expertise.
“The NFF is delighted with this appointment, and we will give him all the necessary support as a Member Association under CAF. We wish him tremendous success in the job,” Ikpeme added.
Adamu’s confirmation marks a major development in Nigeria’s representation within African football administration. As General Secretary, he will oversee CAF’s day-to-day administrative operations and help implement decisions taken by the organisation’s governing bodies.
His appointment also places him at the centre of the administration of African football competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and CAF’s club tournaments.
The NFF has pledged its support for Adamu as he assumes the responsibilities of the substantive position.
