Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone is reportedly considering a tactical adjustment that could give Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman a more defined role as he seeks to rediscover his best form.
According to Spanish sports newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Simeone is exploring a possible switch to a 4-3-3 formation, with Lookman potentially deployed on the left wing. The proposed change could allow the forward to operate in a more familiar position and make better use of his attacking qualities.
Lookman has featured in several attacking roles this season, including left winger, second striker, centre-forward and attacking midfielder, as Atlético have adjusted their approach to different opponents and squad requirements.
The 29-year-old made an immediate impact after joining Atlético from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, scoring a goal and providing an assist in a 5-0 victory over Real Betis.
He subsequently contributed to the club’s run to the Copa del Rey final and the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, finishing the campaign with nine goals and four assists in 24 appearances across competitions.
However, Lookman has reportedly struggled to reproduce that level of output this season. He has recorded two goals and one assist in 13 appearances, accumulating 692 minutes on the pitch.
The Nigerian recently provided an assist during Atlético’s Champions League match against Stuttgart, but his performance against Deportivo reportedly fell below expectations. He was substituted at half-time in the league encounter.
Simeone is now considering whether a change in formation and positioning could help the forward regain his attacking sharpness.
Operating from the left in a 4-3-3 system could give Lookman more opportunities to take on defenders, use his pace and create scoring chances. It could also provide him with a clearer role in Atlético’s attacking structure.
The tactical adjustment remains a reported possibility rather than a confirmed decision by Simeone. Lookman will hope to make the most of his opportunities as Atlético continue their domestic and European campaigns.
