Police officers on Tuesday morning fired tear gas to disperse residents, journalists and political figures gathered at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos for a memorial marking the victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.
Among those affected were the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, Funso Doherty.
The memorial, organised by the Enough is Enough movement, was intended to honour those who lost their lives during the protests.
However, the event was disrupted before participants could lay wreaths at the tollgate, as police officers deployed to the scene fired tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.
A video shared by TheCable showed participants scrambling for safety as the tear gas spread across the area.
The incident prevented the planned wreath-laying ceremony from proceeding as scheduled.
