FIFA’s Technical Study Group has reportedly identified four key areas African teams need to improve as they prepare for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The recommendations focus on attacking efficiency, high pressing, game management and preserving the strengths that have helped African sides compete against leading football nations.
According to the reported analysis, African teams should focus on creating and converting more scoring opportunities inside the penalty area rather than relying too heavily on long-range efforts.
Improving the quality of chances created in dangerous areas could help teams become more clinical in front of goal and make better use of their attacking opportunities.
The second area is high pressing and the ability to recover possession in advanced positions. The technical experts reportedly stressed the importance of winning the ball back quickly, distributing it accurately and exploiting openings before opposing defences can reorganise.
Game management was also highlighted, particularly during the closing stages of matches. The analysis reportedly noted that late goals conceded should not automatically be blamed on physical fitness, as tactical discipline, possession control and decision-making can also influence results.
African teams were therefore encouraged to manage leads more effectively and make sound decisions under pressure to avoid surrendering important points.
The fourth recommendation is to preserve existing strengths, including defensive organisation, effectiveness from set pieces, mental toughness and resilience. These qualities remain valuable assets that African sides can build on while addressing tactical weaknesses.
With the 2030 World Cup approaching, the recommendations offer a potential framework for football authorities, coaches and players to strengthen preparation and improve performance at the highest level.
African nations will hope that sustained investment in tactical development and player preparation can translate into more consistent performances and a stronger challenge at the tournament.
