2027: Court Adjourns Atiku’s Suit Challenging Tinubu’s Eligibility to Sept 28

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned until September 28 further proceedings in a suit filed by former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenging President Bola Tinubu’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election.

The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1888/2026, seeks to prevent Tinubu from seeking re-election over allegations concerning the authenticity of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate allegedly submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The ADC is joined as the second plaintiff in the suit, while Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and INEC are listed as the first, second and third defendants respectively.

In a 25-paragraph affidavit personally sworn in support of the case, Atiku alleged that Tinubu submitted a forged NYSC discharge certificate to INEC among documents used to establish his eligibility to contest the presidency.

He further alleged that the President provided false information in Form CF0001 submitted to the electoral commission.

According to Atiku, the disputed NYSC certificate bears the name “Tinubu Bola Adekunle” rather than the President’s actual name.

The former vice president alleged that the certificate belongs to another individual identified as Adekunle and was therefore not legitimately obtained by Tinubu.

Atiku stated that the document, attached to the suit as Exhibit P2, remains in the custody of INEC.

“I know that the said NYSC certificate is still in existence and in the custody of the 3rd defendant (INEC) and that it is a forgery, as the 1st defendant’s name is not Adekunle, and yet he submitted it to the 3rd defendant to be acted upon as genuine,” Atiku alleged in the affidavit.

He also claimed that Tinubu had been presenting the disputed certificate since 1999, when he contested the Lagos State governorship election.

The suit is asking the court to intervene over the alleged discrepancies in Tinubu’s credentials and determine their implications for his eligibility to participate in the 2027 presidential election.

The allegations contained in the suit have yet to be established by the court, and the defendants are expected to respond to the claims as the proceedings continue.

The adjournment to September 28 means the legal challenge will proceed as political parties and prospective candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
