Popular Nigerian comedian and skit maker Sabinus has criticised the treatment of citizens who demand good governance, questioning why Nigerians are discouraged from speaking out about the country’s challenges.
The comedian expressed his concerns in a social media post on Tuesday, lamenting that citizens who call for accountability are often told to mind their business, while those who choose to stay out of public affairs are also subjected to criticism.
He questioned when Nigerians would unite to demand accountability and the rights and benefits they believe they are being denied by those in positions of authority.
In his post, Sabinus wrote: “A lot is going on in this country, and we’re just keeping quiet. You demand good governance, they tell you to mind your business.
“You try to mind your business, they still insult you. When are we going to come as one and demand what we’re being owed?”
The comedian’s remarks have added to ongoing public conversations about governance, citizens’ rights and the role of collective action in demanding accountability from elected officials and other public office holders.
His comments also highlight the dilemma faced by citizens who wish to speak about national issues but encounter criticism for participating in public discussions.
Sabinus, widely known for his comedy skits, has used his social media platform to draw attention to concerns about the country, joining other public figures who have commented on governance and social issues.
His latest statement centres on the need for Nigerians to engage with national challenges and hold leaders accountable for their responsibilities.
