Freiburg Begin Bundesliga Campaign with Thrilling 4-1 Win Over Bremen

SC Freiburg made a strong start to their Bundesliga campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Werder Bremen at the Europa-Park Stadion, extending their dominance in the fixture to eight wins in their last nine meetings.

Freiburg controlled the opening stages, enjoying most of the possession as Bremen struggled to find their rhythm. The hosts eventually broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark when Yuito Suzuki made a determined run to meet Jan-Niklas Beste’s corner and headed home at the far post.

Beste nearly doubled Freiburg’s advantage five minutes before half-time, but his long-range effort narrowly cleared the crossbar. Freiburg did not have to wait long for their second, however, as Igor Matanović received a precise pass through the Bremen defence and unleashed a powerful 25-yard strike beyond Karl Hein just before the interval.

Bremen’s task became even more difficult shortly after the restart. Less than three minutes into the second half, a deflected cross fell to Suzuki, who reacted quickly to turn the ball home from close range.

Freiburg then put the result beyond doubt before the hour mark. After winning possession, Suzuki combined with Matanović, who drove into the box before cleverly returning the ball to his teammate. Suzuki calmly rolled the ball into an empty net to complete his brace and make it 4-0.

Bremen managed a late consolation through Dariusz Stalmach, who headed home from a corner, but it was little more than a consolation as Freiburg comfortably secured all three points.

The victory marks another impressive opening-day result for Freiburg, who have now won six of their last eight Bundesliga curtain-raisers. Bremen, meanwhile, extended their poor record in season openers, remaining winless in their last 12 Bundesliga opening matches.
