Rivers United head coach Finidi George has declared that winning the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title will be his team’s primary objective in the 2026/27 season as the Port Harcourt club intensifies preparations for another domestic campaign.
Speaking ahead of the new season, the former Super Eagles coach said Rivers United have put last season behind them and are fully focused on mounting a stronger title challenge. The club narrowly missed out on the league crown in the previous campaign after finishing second behind champions Rangers International, despite securing qualification for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.
Finidi expressed confidence in the quality of his squad, insisting that the players have the determination and experience needed to compete for major honours. He noted that the team’s immediate priority is to prepare adequately before the season begins, stressing that hard work during pre-season will lay the foundation for success.
According to the former Ajax winger, Rivers United will approach every fixture with the mentality of earning maximum points while maintaining consistency throughout the campaign. He emphasised that winning the league requires discipline, focus and the ability to perform under pressure over the course of the season.
The coach also acknowledged the competitiveness of the NPFL, describing the league as one where every club has the potential to challenge for honours. He urged his players not to underestimate any opponent and to remain committed to the club’s ambitions from the opening match until the end of the season.
Rivers United are expected to compete on multiple fronts, with the club returning to the CAF Champions League after earning one of Nigeria’s continental slots. Finidi believes balancing domestic and continental commitments will require careful squad management but remains optimistic that his side can rise to the challenge.
The former Nigerian international has already guided Enyimba to an NPFL title in his coaching career and is now hoping to deliver similar success with Rivers United. Since taking charge, he has overseen significant improvement in the club’s performances, transforming them into one of the strongest teams in the league.
With pre-season preparations gathering pace, Rivers United will be aiming to build on last season’s impressive campaign and finally reclaim the NPFL title. Finidi maintained that while continental football remains important, lifting the league trophy is the club’s foremost ambition for the new season.
