The Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) on Monday July 6, 2026 declared its resolve to protect the welfare, rights and interests of constituents, as it took bold steps against two oil companies over alleged environmental and community grievances.
In a decisive move during plenary, the House summoned the management of Heirs Energies Limited to appear before it on Monday, July 20, over the company’s persistent refusal to honour invitations by the House Committee on Public Petitions.
The summons stems from a petition filed by the Omuohoa Community Executive in Iguruta, Ikwerre Local Government Area.
The lawmakers warned that they would not hesitate to invoke their constitutional powers, including issuance of a warrant of arrest, should the company continue to ignore the summons.
The Assembly also urged Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited to immediately pay over 205 million Naira in compensation to affected persons and families in B-Dere community, Gokana Local Government Area.
The House further directed the company to commence immediate remediation, cleanup and restoration of lands devastated by an oil spill from the Ogale-Bonny Pipeline in the area.
The Assembly reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability from corporate entities operating in the state and addressing the plight of impacted communities.
