Bayelsa State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle E. Emelah, has given the assurance that the Government Science and Technical College, Swali, Bayelsa State, would produce school leavers, equipped with vocational skills and education.
Emelah said the school leavers will not just be certified with paper qualifications but skills that will make them self reliant , so as to earn a living after leaving secondary school.

The education commissioner stated this on Thursday, July 2, 2026, when he led the South South Development Commission, on a tour at the Technical College.
He revealed that the state governor, Senator Douye Diri’s administration, is poised to produce young people equipped with skills hence the Technical Education policy by the government.
The delegation, led by the Managing Director, Usoro Akpabio, visited the school’s ICT Centre, Block Laying Department, Welding and Fabrication, Catering, Electrical, Garment making among other departments.
According to the commissioner, the state’s technical education policy is designed to equip students with employable skills, promote entrepreneurship, and prepare them for productive participation in the economy.

Bayelsa State Government’s investment in technical and vocational education, was highly commended by the South-South Development Commission.
Akpabio described it as a model capable of equipping young people with practical skills and reducing youth unemployment across the region.
His words: “the technical education initiative is impressive and impactful, vocational education provides students with lifelong skills while creating alternative pathways to employment and self-reliance.

“Not every child would pursue a conventional academic career, technical and vocational education offers practical opportunities for young people to build sustainable livelihoods.
“The expansion of technical education across Bayelsa’s local government areas demonstrates the state’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce capable of driving economic growth.”
She further commended the state governor for investing in vocational training with the technical education system spread across the local governments of the state.
The South South Development Commission reiterated that equipping the youths with hands on vocational education will contribute significantly to reducing insecurity and launching the youths to take over the local economy in the State and beyond.
Akpabio ended by pledging the commitment of the Commission to partner with Bayelsa State Government to spread the Technical Education initiative across other States in the region.
