Nigerians Praised For Sustaining The Country’s Longest Uninterrupted Democracy

Nigerians have been commended for sustaining the country’s longest uninterrupted democratic era despite prevailing economic and social difficulties.

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar gave the commendation while speaking during a Democracy Day event in Abuja organised by the Coalition Political Action Committee (COPAC) in Abuja on Friday, June 12, 2026.

Alhaji Atiku who was Represented by a former House of Representatives member, Nnenna Ukeje, noted that the resilience of citizens continues to inspire efforts toward building a better nation.

He urged Nigerians to use the Democracy Day as a moment to recommit themselves to protecting democratic values.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC presidential candidate, said the country urgently needs responsible leadership capable of addressing its mounting challenges and restoring public confidence in governance.

Alhaji Atiku declared that he is prepared to lead Nigeria on a path of recovery and national renewal if elected in 2027.

According to him, citizens must oppose attempts to weaken opposition voices, suppress accountability, and undermine democratic institutions.

He called for unity, competence, and effective leadership ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that the country deserves a government focused on progress and national cohesion.

The political leader pledged to rebuild institutions, strengthen national security, and promote unity across the country.

He described himself as an experienced leader who understands that political power belongs to the people and must be exercised solely in their interest.

Alhaji Atiku while speaking the state of the nation, expressed concern over Nigeria’s rising debt profile, warning that increasing borrowing threatens future generations while diverting resources away from critical sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security.
