Authorities overseeing the controversial classroom project in Ukpeliede Community have explained the circumstances that led to the cancellation of the contract currently sparking protests in the area.
The officials disclosed the details to the Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, amid rising tension in the community on Monday, May 18, 2026.
According to the source, petitions were received from contractors shortly after the bidding process for a six-classroom block project. The petitions alleged a conflict of interest, claiming that the wife of a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) was a director in the company that secured the contract.

“We received petitions after the bidding of the six-classroom block in Ukpeliede by contractors, alleging that a BoT member’s wife was a director of the company that won the bid,” the source said.
Following the complaints, authorities held a meeting with the BoT and launched an investigation, which reportedly confirmed the allegation.
“Investigations confirmed a conflict of interest against Mr. Vincent Prince Ekwem, a BoT member whose wife won the contract,” the source added.
The development prompted further objections from other contractors, who insisted they were better qualified to execute the project.
In response, the authorities said they decided to cancel the contract and initiate a fresh bidding process within seven days to ensure fairness and transparency.

“We decided to cancel and retender the contract within seven days to place everyone on a neutral ground. This was communicated to the BoT in writing,” the source stated.
Efforts to resolve the dispute are ongoing, with a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 18, 2026, involving key stakeholders. However, tensions remain high, as some community members have threatened to stage protests.
Reacting to the situation, YEAC-Nigeria called for calm and urged all parties to adhere to due process.
The organisation expressed hope that the matter would be resolved in line with established rules, contractual obligations, and relevant laws to ensure justice, restore peace, and promote development in the community.
