As anticipation builds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, many Nigerian football fans are expressing growing concerns about visa requirements and travel costs associated with attending the tournament.
The tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be the first in the competition’s history to feature 48 teams and matches spread across several cities in the three North American nations.
While the expansion promises a bigger and more inclusive tournament, the complex travel and visa arrangements have raised questions among supporters in countries like Nigeria who hope to witness the spectacle live.
Unlike previous tournaments hosted in a single country, the tri-nation hosting structure means fans may need to comply with different immigration rules depending on where their matches are scheduled. For Nigerian travellers, this could involve securing visas for one or more of the host countries, each with its own application process and documentation requirements.
The biggest hurdle for many Nigerians will likely be obtaining visas to the United States and Canada, both of which have stringent entry procedures. The United States, in particular, requires applicants to go through detailed documentation, interviews and proof of financial capability before approval is granted. Canada also operates a similarly strict visa system that includes biometric data submission and extensive background checks.

For many football enthusiasts, the cost of travel is another major concern. International flights from Nigerian cities such as Lagos and Abuja to North America can be expensive, especially during global events when airfare typically surges. When combined with accommodation, match tickets, feeding and local transportation, the overall cost could be far beyond what the average supporter can afford.
These challenges may limit the number of Nigerian fans able to attend the tournament in person, despite the country’s deep passion for football. Nigeria has one of the most vibrant football fan bases in Africa, and supporters are known for travelling across continents to back the national team, popularly known as the Super Eagles.
There are also concerns about visa processing timelines. Football fans often plan travel months in advance, but delays in visa approvals or appointment scheduling could disrupt travel arrangements. Some supporters fear that high demand for visas in the lead-up to the tournament might make it even harder to secure appointments at embassies.
Despite these challenges, many fans remain hopeful that host countries will introduce special arrangements to make travel easier for supporters during the tournament. In previous World Cups, some host nations provided simplified entry procedures or fan-specific identification systems to facilitate smoother travel for ticket holders.
