Bayelsa Govt Launches Digital Training For Civil Servants

The Bayelsa State government has inaugurated a training programme at the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, Secretariat Complex Annex 4, Yenagoa.

The programme on digitalization project in civil service is expected to deliver mutual benefits to both employees and the state government.

The Head of Service, Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer who inaugurated the training explained that the initiative was designed to replace cumbersome paper-based processes with efficient electronic systems, thereby enhancing productivity across the service.

He explained that the programme includes basic computer training, document digitalisation, and secure data storage, all aimed at improving operational efficiency and supporting staff development.

The training will be conducted in phases across ministries, departments, agencies (MDAs), and parastatals, beginning with personnel from the Office of the Head of Service before extending to other government institutions.

Sawyer also revealed that the production of newly digitalised identification cards has commenced, starting with Permanent Secretaries and newly recruited staff.

The head of service also noted that the ID cards will serve as valid means of identification for official and external purposes, including use in banks and airports.

He further emphasised that future promotion exercises will be strictly merit-based and urged workers to align with the government’s vision of building a modern and efficient civil service.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Communication, Science and Technology, Engr. Munalayefa Gibson, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Yelah Joseph Alagoa, highlighted the importance of the initiative, stressing that it will boost productivity and improve record management in the service.

He expressed concern over the lack essential computer skills by some civil servants which is required for digital operations.
He commended the Head of Service and the Civil Service Commission for organising the programme, describing it as a step toward strengthening institutional capacity.

Speaking on behalf of participants, Mr. Remember Bright expressed optimism that the training would enhance document management and reduce workload in the workplace.

Other dignitaries at the event included the Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, Mr. Perekiye Buruboyefe, represented by the Commission’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Stanley Sokari, as well as the Permanent Secretary, Establishment, Training and Pensions Bureau, Dr. Charles Eluma.
