Airtel Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, which previously allowed eligible prepaid customers to borrow and repay on their next recharge.
In a statement issued on Friday, the company’s Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, said the decision is part of ongoing adjustments aimed at aligning operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
Despite the suspension, the company assured customers that regular airtime and data purchases remain fully available through existing channels, noting that the move will not affect overall service quality or network performance.

Also speaking, the Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the development as a necessary and responsible step. “This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements.
Airtel Nigeria remains committed to compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem,” he said.
The telecom operator added that customers will be informed once there are updates regarding the suspended service. The move comes amid increasing regulatory scrutiny of digital lending and credit-based services in Nigeria’s telecom sector, as operators adjust to new compliance expectations.
